At 900 meters above sea level it is one of the main monastic centers in Japan, founded twelve centuries ago by the monk Kukai, also known as Kobo Daishi, for the study and practice of Esoteric Buddhism. It is home to the sect of Shingon Buddhism.
Its main site is the Kongobu-ji temple, which together with the complex called Garan and the Okunoin area (famous for its cemetery surrounded by a cedar forest) represent the most significant places of Koyasan.
